Welcome to the Oklahoma World War II wiki!

This wiki seeks to promote awareness of the diverse and rich array of resources available to learners of all ages to hear the stories and learn about the sacrifices of Oklahomans who served in World War II. The OKWWII wiki supports the goal of empowering Oklahoma students and teachers to become local oral history archivists by recording and sharing their own digital stories about veteran experiences. These stories are being collected through the Oklahoma Digital Centennial Project and through the Share a Story page on a special Oklahoma WWII website.

This wiki is our central meeting place to share stories and pictures about WWII and especially about the dedication of the U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Participate in a special World War II classroom project and USSOklahoma ceremony for secondary students.

Updates:

A webquest is an assignment which asks students to use the World Wide Web to learn about and/or synthesize their knowledge a specific topic. A “true” webquest, as originally designed by Bernie Dodge and Tom March, requires synthesis of the new knowledge by accomplishing a “task,” often to solve a hypothetical problem or address a real-world issue. Simpler web activities designed for students to investigate and collect new knowledge from web-based sources can also be a more engaging and effective replacement for "read the chapter and complete the review questions" activities.

A variety of different webquests have already been created which focus on World War II history. Oklahoma educators are working on creating webquests which connect more specifically to the USS Oklahoma and the memorial dedication. Please use the WebQuest activities which have been created already, and feel free to modify these to create your own! If you create you own WebQuest, please add it to our links here.

Content of our project wiki has been reorganized in five different broad categories, available in the left navigation sidebar.
Under Video and MultiMedia, direct and embedded links to our videoconference on December 6, 2007, from Pearl Harbor has been added to the page Videoconference 6 Dec 2007.
A new Memorial Dedication page has been created (also under Video and MultiMedia) including links to five different shorter videos related to the dedication, and the eight segments of the full dedication ceremony.
A new VoiceThreads page has been created with a digital story related to this project. More VoiceThreads can and will be added here in the months ahead.

The most important aspect of our project is the invitation for Oklahoma learners of all ages to get involved by interviewing a veteran in their local area, recording the interview, and sharing it with others around the state and our world via the Internet. Educators and students have the opportunity to attend and participate in two different "live events" associated with the dedication of the U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 6 and 7, 2007. These events include:

A pre-dedication videoconference on Thursday, December 6th at 2 pm Oklahoma (US Central) time and 10 am Hawaii time. Part 1 of this videoconference will last 45 minutes. Part 2 will be a more informal question and answer discussion with World War II veterans and will last approximately 45 minutes. This event will be shared BOTH as an interactive videoconference and a webcast (view-only) event.
Weather and Internet connectivity-permitting, the actual U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial dedication ceremony scheduled for 4 pm Oklahoma (US Central) time and 12 pm (noon) Hawaii time on Friday, December 7 will be shared via a live videoconference and webcast with students and teachers. This ceremony is expected to last 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Prior to and followingeach videoconference, teachers and/or students can submit questions as comments to the USS Oklahoma Memorial Digital Learning Project blog located at: http://blog.newsok.com/projectwwii/
Teachers in schools with available videoconferencing equipment (H.323/IP compatible) can apply to participate "live" with their students in each videoconference. The number of live videoconference connections for schools will be limited, to insure participating students have opportunities to actually ask questions during each connection. Oklahoma schools will be given priority for these videoconference connections, but if space permits it is possible that schools outside Oklahoma may be able to connect "live" as well.
Teachers and students in ANY location (in Oklahoma or outside the state) are welcome to view the live "webcast" of these videoconferences, which will be embedded on the educator portal page of http://oklahomawwii.org. Prior registration for viewers of the webcast is encouraged but NOT required. Individuals not directly associated or involved with schools are also welcome to view the webcast "live." Project coordinators request that teachers and students at each school site use a SINGLE computer with a LCD projector or large format televison to share the webcast with multiple students at your location.

Archived (saved) videos of both videoconferences will be available via the Oklahoma World War II Stories educator portal (http://oklahomawwii.org) following each live event. These archived videos will be publicly accessible and NOT password protected.

If teachers and students at individual school campuses would like to participate in the "live" or "webcast" videoconferences, one person from each school should complete the registration webform available on:

Schools selected for the "live" videoconferences will be contacted by Lance Ford, technology director for Howe Public Schools and our project videoconferencing coordinator, to arrange for a prior test connection and scheduling your videoconferencing endpoint / CODEC into the Howe Public Schools bridge for the actual videoconferencing event(s).

During each videoconference, participating schools are asked to connect 30 minutes prior to the start of the event and keep local microphones muted. Questions will be solicited from participating schools in a "round robin" format during the Q&A periods of each videoconference.

A Memorial for the USS Oklahoma fallen heroes, survivors and surviving familes was dedicated on December 7, 2007, on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The memorial dedication ceremony lasted two hours, and is available online in multiple parts.

For a better understanding of WWII and the events at Pearl Harbor, check out the resources listed to the left. They are generally organized for elementary and secondary students and include literature, magazine and technology resources. Also access resources included in our Videos and Multimedia section. (If you find other appropriate resources to share please post them to this wiki.)

Students from around Oklahoma participated in a live, interactive videoconference on December 6, 2007, with Pearl Harbor survivors and others FROM Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This 45 minute videoconference is archived and available to watch in three different segments. Before viewing this videoconference with students, have them explore and use other resources on our website to develop a working knowledge of WWII and the events at Pearl Harbor. (The more students know before they view the archived videoconference, the more they will benefit from this archived, interactive event.)

Another great resource is the Ken Burns' War series featured on Oklahoma's PBS affiliate OETA-TV. Recently The Oklahoman, NewsOK and OETA partnered to create a special website to document and share the experiences of Oklahomans during World War II. Of special interest is the Dec. 7th dedication of the U.S.S. Oklahoma Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Crews from OETA and The Oklahoman will be onsite to document that ceremony and capture stories of some of the survivors of the "day that lives in infamy."

This wiki and the World War II website support the goal of empowering students and teachers to be part of history by becoming local oral history archivists through participation in the Oklahoma Digital Centennial Project and the Oklahoma WWII Stories project by recording and sharing digital stories about Oklahoman veterans.

The pages that follow provide templates for collaborating on lessons surrounding the events of World War 2. Each of the lessons are listed in the Navigation panel to the left. Click on the title of a lesson to open it in a new window.

The lessons are often cross-disciplinary and can be modified to be applicable across a wide range of subject areas and grade levels. As lessons are created and modified, use "Keyword tags" to aid in searching for lessons applicable to a particular subject and/or grade. Begin by tagging each lesson with the tag, "lesson".

Remember, this is a collaborative effort! Please contribute and amend the current lessons!

The learning objectives for Oklahoma students are outlined in the Priority Academic Student Skills. Objectives related to this wiki include U.S. History and World History as follows:

U.S. History Standard 8: The student will analyze the major causes, events, and effects of United States involvement in World War II. *1. Relate the rise of totalitarian regimes in the Soviet Union, Germany, Italy, and Japan to the rise of communism, Nazism, and fascism in the 1930s and 1940s, and the response of the United States. 2. Investigate appeasement, isolationism, and the war debates in the United States prior to the outbreak of war. 3. Evaluate the impact of preparation and mobilization for war, including the internment policies and their effects (e.g., Korematsu v. United States). 4. Detail major battles, military turning points, and key strategic decisions in both European and Pacific theaters. 5. Analyze public and political reactions in the United States to the events of the Holocaust.

World History Standard 16: The student will analyze major twentieth century historical events through World War II. 4. Examine the rise of nationalism, and the causes and effects of World War II (e.g., the Holocaust, economic and military power shifts since 1945, the founding of the United Nations, and the political partitioning of Europe, Africa, and Asia).

Our 47 minute videoconference on December 6, 2007, from Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is available in three different segments from OETA and NewsOK.com. This was a fantastic interactive videoconference, and was followed by an additional 45 minute question and answer videoconference with Oklahoma students. Dick Pryor of OETA hosted and facilitated conversations with those involved with the USS Oklahoma memorial dedication, as well as two veteran survivors of the USS Oklahoma attack on December 7, 1941. This special website, Oklahoma World War II Stories (oklahomawwii.org) has been created to share and collect stories of Oklahoma WWII Veterans as well as other Oklahomans involved in the war effort at home. A variety of outstanding videos are available on the website which can help build student background knowledge and about the war, the people who fought and supported it, and those affected by it. We have provided direct links to several videos you and your students will want to explore on our wiki page "Videos To Watch," included in our WWII Webquests section.

Encourage your students to also take time to explore the videos and other resources on the Oklahoma World War II Stories site both during class time as well as at home or from other locations where they have access to the Internet.
