"We were awake and a lot of us were getting ready to go to shore for church services," he said. "I was going down a passageway when the torpedoes hit. I didn't have a flashlight and I couldn't see a thing, but I just went. Everything was automatic because of the training. Grab your gun, grab your lifejacket and go to your battle station. I was to head back to the steam room, but there was no getting back down there. That ship was turning over. In 18 minutes it was bottomside up. That's pretty fast, isn't it?"
