Children and the WarThis is a featured page

Background

During World War II, children of all ages participated in the war effort in a variety of ways. They helped with scrap drives to collect essential materials such as newspapers, metal, and rubber. Some purchased war stamps and bonds. The money generated by school children purchased 11,000 parachutes, 2,900 planes, and over 44,000 jeeps.

Activity

Ask students to use the local library or other resources to find information on how local children responded to the war. They may also interview veterans and other community members. In a role play activity, students may create a flyer or an article for the newspapers promoting the activities of a local children’s group.
